While this time of year usually brings parades and other big events, this year looks a bit different as we continue to deal with COVID-19 and the state limiting large gatherings. Communities are doing their best to preserve some of our favorite longstanding traditions.
Fireworks in Brainerd are a go and will be on July 4 around 10:00 p.m. Brainerd Community Action will be launching fireworks from a slightly different location. With the extensive construction at the Brainerd Lakes High School and the limitations on large gatherings, watching the fireworks from the high school hill and the lower site will not be available. If you’ve watched the fireworks from another location other than the high school, you’ll have no problem viewing them again this year.
The annual Fourth of July parade and entertainment are canceled for this year. Arts in the Park will be postponed to a later date.
Grand View Lodge usually holds its Party at the Pines on July 2. But because of COVID-19 and adhering to the state’s social distancing rules, it’s canceled for this year. Grand View Lodge plans to bring back Party at the Pines next year (2021).
2020 marks the 50th anniversary of the Crosslake fireworks display. Fireworks will be launched from Sand Island on July 4 around dusk (10 p.m.). You can see the show from the shores of Cross Lake. Tune into 101.5 FM for choreographed music to the display.
July 4 you can join the virtual run/walk for Grandpa’s Run for the Walleye. Proceeds from the race go to area food shelves.
July 4 there will be free live music in Crosslake’s Town Square featuring world renowned Patchouli & Terra Guitarra who are master guitarists and singer-songwriters.
The City of Crosby canceled its fireworks display and festivities for this year.
The Freedom Days parade normally held on July 3 is canceled. But downtown Nisswa is embracing “Independent” Freedom Days activities and shopping to support local businesses.
Even though 2020 has brought us COVID-19 and all its challenges, Pequot Lakes is proceeding with some of its events for Stars & Stripes Days. The annual fireworks display is on for July 3. You can view the show from about anywhere in Pequot Lakes with Trailside Park being a perfect viewing spot. You’re encouraged to watch from your car. Or if you’re out in the park, be mindful and social distance from other spectators.
The Stars & Stripes Days parade, firemen pancake breakfast, bed races are all canceled. But you will find activities happening July 3 and 4. Before the fireworks show on July 3, there will be food vendors and Water Wars in Trailside Park. On July 4, there will be a craft fair and food vendors along Main Street. The American Legion is sponsoring a beer garden, and there will be live music.
