Parks

Our region is home to hundreds of lakes -- and even more trees. In Minnesota, forests cover almost one-third of our total land area. These forests were established to produce timber, provide outdoor recreation, protect watersheds and sustain a variety of plants and animals.

The Brainerd Lakes Area is also home to the oldest and one of the newest parks in the state of Minnesota. Pillsbury State Forest, the oldest and one of the most scenic forests in the state, has offered residents and visitors alike great trails and nature for over 100 years. The Cuyuna State Recreational Area, located near Crosby, became a part of the state park system in 1993 and is quickly becoming a favorite due to the mine pit lakes, birding opportunities, paved bike trails and mountain bike trails.

The Brainerd Lakes Area also offers dozens of federal and city parks, as well as nature centers like the Northland Arboretum and the Paul Bunyan Nature Learning Center, which provide not only the ability to experience our wildlife and environment, but also tools to learn more about them and how to protect them for future generations.
