Our region is home to hundreds of lakes -- and even more trees. In Minnesota, forests cover almost one-third of our total land area. These forests were established to produce timber, provide outdoor recreation, protect watersheds, and sustain a variety of plants and animals.

The Brainerd Lakes Area is also home to the oldest, one of the newest, and one of the most unique parks. Pillsbury State Forest, the state's oldest park, has offered residents and visitors alike great trails and nature for over 100 years. Cuyuna State Recreational Area became a part of the state park system in 1993. It is still considered to be in its development stage. Big Island on the Whitefish Chain of lakes is only accessible by boat, but offers a wonderful place to picnic or become one with nature.

The Brainerd Lakes Area also offers dozens of federal and city parks, as well as nature centers like the Northland Arboretum and the Paul Bunyan Nature Learning Center, which provide not only the ability to experience our wildlife and environment, but also tools to learn more about them and how to protect them for future generations.
