In addition to public and private school options in the Brainerd Lakes Area, families may choose to home-school their children. Through state accrediting organizations, families in the area are able to offer independent learning opportunities for all ages. Several home schooling groups have also formed, offering valuable networking for not only the parents but also the children.

Children who are home schooled are able to participate in extra-curricular activities in the public schools. The students are tested in a variety of subjects annually.
