Mining in the area of Ironton began in 1903. Ultimately there were ore shafts on all sides of the town. Ironton was plotted in 1910 and incorporated on June 5, 1911.

A familiar slogan was "IRONTON - WHERE THE MINES ARE." In Ironton, all mining was done underground which insured that the mines were able to be operated year round.

A disaster occurred on February 5, 1924. Forty-one miners died in the Milford Mine cave-in. The mine quickly filled with water, mud, and quicksand, making it impossible to rescue the miners down below.
