The early settlers came to the Emily area not because of mining, but because they had been in the area on hunting and fishing trips with their fathers and neighbors. In 1862, the U.S. Homestead Act opened up free land. The settlers established homes, finding work at the Cross Lake Lumber Company. Emily Township was organized on December 4, 1900.
In the summer of 1907, at five years of age, the future pilot Charles Lindbergh, Jr. stayed at a resort in Emily. He and his family were guests at the Anderson Resort on Ruth Lake.
From the early 1900's through the 1940's there was a community center alive with activity. The townspeople spent many Saturday nights there dancing. All they would need is a fiddle, an accordion and a harmonica to "let the dancing begin!"
