The City of East Gull Lake was organized as a township in 1924 when Fairview Township was divided. In 1924 the assessed valuation of the newly organized town of East Gull was $43,494 and today, valuation exceeds $150,000,000. Town meetings were held in the East Gull Lake School, a small wooden building at that time. In 1932 a new school building was built on that same site and the building has served as the East Gull Lake City Hall since consolidation of East Gull Lake and Brainerd School districts. Over the years, resorts have developed as the primary business in the area. At first, the resorts were open during the summer only, but with the popularity of snowmobiles, resorts began to promote winter vacations and world-class golf and conference facilities.
